  1. Poppy(Shih Tzu x Bischon Frise) has completed her 6 week basic training and has started advanced training. The trainers are great and Poppy, who is a prima donna, is coming on really well.
Poppy also attends puppy play which she really enjoys and she spends one day a week at doggy day school. Mixing with other dogs of different ages and sizes without us around has really made Poppy grow in independence. Even after the first session we found that she was much more able to amuse herself and less reliant on our constant attention.
I cannot thank the staff enough. They are all brilliant.

  2. At about 10 months Jaz became very anxious on walks and would chase down and pin other dogs, especially the small and fluffly kind. Despite having gone to puppy classes, continuing the training and having a good role model in our Golden retriever he just had no impulse control around other dogs. We had a 121 with Gill and started meet and greet classes. All went well for a while then seemed to take a turn for the worse. We had another 121 with Gill where it was decided that Jaz would do some 121 walking with Gill and carefully selected dogs. I learnt loads about Jaz's triggers and his body language during these walks and relayed these to hubby to ensure we were both reinforcing the training. I have a very demanding job so have had to have several breaks in training but have always continued with the training and knowledge given by Gill. It has been three years of patience, practice and some setbacks but I can honstly say it has been worth it. We still have the odd wobble but Jaz can now be walked off lead beside us with all but very excitable dogs and has recently been introduced to two cats successfully. Jaz is proof that it can be a long but extremely rewarding process. Many thanks to Gill and her team x

  3. Mac has just finished his 6 week puppy training course with Becky. He has learned new commands and enjoyed the socialisation of being with other puppies. Becky also gave us lots of good advice which was very helpful.

  4. My rescue Whippet Eddie has just finished his well behaved dog training. If you know sight hounds you will know that they are masters at making food disappear, so when Abbie wanted me to not only teach Eddie to leave a treat alone but to do so while it was on his paw my thoughts were that pigs might fly. With Abbie's help and encouragement though he didn't only manage it with a treat on one paw but one on each of his front paws. I can praise Abbie highly enough for the what her teaching has helped Eddie and me achieve.

  5. Chester, our Beagle was our first dog and no matter how many books you read, we needed help. We were introduced to Gill and Oakwood through our vets, starting with puppy play, then progressing onto more advanced training and started using the doggy daycare. This was a great way of socialising Chester with all types and size of dog. All the staff are fantastic and show true passion in their job.

After 6 years, Chester still enjoys going, he knows when he's getting close and always tells the staff he's on his way.
I would recommend Oakwood to any dog owner, novice or skilled.

  8. Our west highland white puppy was a real handful. We had got to the point where we felt we might have made a dreadful mistake. Gill was very reassuring and after a 121 session we decided to do the puppy training course.
It has been very very helpful. Our puppy is calmer and better behaved, special mention to trainer George. His calm and friendly manner with both dogs and owners was excellent. We felt he was very encouraging and always had time to address any issues we had. We are keen to keep our puppy on the right track and so have booked on the next course with George. Big thank you to George for all his patience, expertise and helpful hints 😁

He is such a loving member of the family he loves his belly rubs, been cuddled, and laying with us on the settee. I can't imagine life with out him. I would highly recommend Oakwood for rehoming a dog. We will enclose photos shortly

  10. My dog Murphy is a golden retriever so as a puppy he was mischievous and fussy. Knowing Murphy was going to be a large breed and very strong I thought it best to go do the training and do it properly. Murphy is now 1 year and 9 months and we have just passed our KC silver award. It has been hard work mainly because Murphy would always pull me while loose lead walking but thanks to the training and sound advice given about hand feeding Murphy we made it to Silver. I will be continuing to feed Murphy by hand because he is more polite and well behaved and I have no doubt we will pass our gold if we keep up the hard work. Thanks to all the staff at Oakwood 😄

  11. I first came to Oakwood in 2007 with my 2 year old jack russell Rory. I got Rory as a puppy but on his first walk in the park (on lead) he was jumped on my an uncontrolled (off lead) lab. From that day he was reactive to other dogs that approached him. It has also caused him to suffer anxiety and is nervous of the slightest noise/movement. Through attending a number of different classes and working with all the trainers Rory has gone from only being able to spend 2 minutes in class to being able to spend half a day in the Oakwood Creche and can go on group walks with other reactive dogs. We're currently taking a break from meet and greet classes and doing some agility work. Whilst this is great fun for Rory it is also helping with his anxiety issues and confidence building (believe it or not he can be scared of the obstacles). I can't thank Gill and the team enough.

  13. Thankyou Natalie for giving us the confidence and direction with Sher. having adopted a 10 yr old GSD we were very concerned that out on walks she appeared very aggressive around other dogs, as we have discovered with your help, it's all noise and excitement! We are still working on teaching Sher to control herself however we are now confident that she is lovely when she gets to another dog. Oakwood has taught us that an old dog can learn new tricks!

  15. I first met Gill back at her opening in 2007. My previous dog Scooby had severe dog and people agression. We had tried two other dog trainings before we came to Oakwood, both had washed their hands of our stressed boy. Thankfully Gill took us on and helped us with mechanisms that would help us all. Sadly we lost Scooby three years ago and took a short break before adopting Oakwood rescue Bruce! He is gorgous, a cheeky lively staffie who loves everyone! Bruce has enjoyed Meet and Greet, Good Citizen and is currently testing his paws at agility. He is always excited to return to Oakwood who are always on hand with support, never judgemental and always there when we need them. I can't sing their praises highly enough. Thanks for sticking with us guys (I know its been a roller coaster ride!)

  16. We adopted Dodger the collie x staffie from oakwood about in January. When we got him we were warned of his dog aggression, he was unable to even be across the street from another dog without showing aggression even with a muzzle on. We have done 5 weeks of training with Kerri at Oakwood and he is are now able to sit within 5 feet of another dog unmuzzled and stay calm with our direction. This is all down to Kerri`s fantastic training, she gave us the right attitudes, advice and knowledge to give us the tools to work on it at home. She has been a massive help and it shows in his behave. I highly recommend using Oakwoods services and training classes (especially Kerri for behavioural issues). Can't thank you guys enough and we look forward to many more sessions!! Definitely 5* service!!

  18. We brought our puppy to play sessions when she was 10 weeks old and continued these until she was 5 1/2 months, they were excellent for socialisation with people and other dogs. We have also completed the 6 week beginner puppy obedience classes which were also great, we received lots of useful information and the trainers are always willing to answer any additional questions. We are now on the advanced puppy classes, hoping to move to kennel club bronze. I can honestly say our dog would not be as well behaved or as healthy without the help we have, and are still receiving, from oakwood canine services. Thank you for all your help. 19. Have trained my dogs at Oakwood for the last two and a half years. We have participated in obedience KC Good Citizens, Agility, Fly Ball and Ring Craft These classes give my dogs fun and also help with socialisation with both people and other dogs. Great friendly trainers and lots of new doggy people friends. My dogs love what we do and as long as they are happy so am I. Can't decide what to do for our next class!!!

  20. Day two on the liver paste with Bailey. 3 miole walk tonight, with encounters with eight different dogs on lead and off.
Bailey was absolutely brilliant, with no aggression shown to any of them. He even managed a 5 minute sit/stay whilst i chatted to another dog owner, yippee lets hope for the best. Many thanks Gill

  21. I started 1 2 1 sessions with Holly at Oakwood for my 5 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback September 2013. Honey had become fear aggressive with dogs, joggers, cyclists etc. Walking was becoming unpleasant for both of us. Oakwood assessed my dog and after several 1 2 1 sessions we were allowed to join the Meet and Greet Class. Oakwood have been excellent throughout, the 1 2 1 sessions gave me the tools and lots of reading literature to pre-empt and prevent confrontations. The Meet and Greet reinforced this with socialising and structure developing an etiquette for dogs to behave when coming into contact with each other. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done. This is an ongoing task and Oakwood are very good at their job.

  22. We first came to Oakwood in 2012 with our two Jack Russell Terriers Kobi and Rolo, who were then aged 6 and 7. After several very bad experiences with dogs throughout their lives they became fearful aggressive with dogs. For many years they would bark and act aggressively as soon as they caught sight of a dog and we would desperately try to walk in the other direction to avoid this. We finally decided that we needed to do something about it and Oakwood have been fantastic. We did lots of 1 2 1 classes with Gill and gradually became part of a meet and greet class. Something we would have never thought possible when we started. We currently attend 3 meet and greet classes per week and are still seeing great improvements. With the help of the amazing trainers at Oakwood we have been able to turn our dogs lives around. We cannot thank them enough for everything they have helped us with. It has taken a lot of dedication and hard work but the trainers at Oakwood have been there every step of the way. If we can do it so can you, with their help.

  23. We took Oscar, pug jack russel cross to puppy play at around 10weeks. His first class He wouldn't move from my protection and was very scared. I was worried and aprehensive to put him back in a situation he disliked. Only 5 weeks later just one play session a week Oscar is no longer scared of socialising with other dogs and I feel much more confident when meeting other dogs when out walking. I would recommend to anyone to persevere with socialising and the puppy play classes are an ideal controlled situation to gently help shy puppies enjoy play.

  24. Bertie had his first groom and clip today with you at your county road shop. I cannot praise you enough for the high standards that I saw. Your shop is lovely, clean, with wide open spaces. I love the fact you have one dog at once, so Bertie was relaxed, calm and the centre of attention. He received a 5 star service. Your staff clearly understand what dogs need, and welcome owners with a warm welcome. Your groomer listened to exactly what I wanted, making good suggesting and my dog looked wonderful when leaving. I will recommend you to everybody. I can't wait to come back. X

  26. Would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Oakwood for the great help you have given me with training Bella - especially Nicky & Wes.
Bella was very lead agressive and extremely wary of strangers so we began work in the meet and greet group, at first I felt like I was fighting a losing battle but after lots of support from Nicky and some additional 1-2-1 classes, to help build Bellas confidence, we have really turned a corner, I feel much more confident and we can really start enjoying the time we are out and about rather that seeing leaving the house as something to dread.
I have to say that even if there are weeks when it feels as if nothing is working, perservering and listening to the advice given really does work, I'm much calmer and happier when walking Bella which in turn makes her happier - I can even talk to people on our walks now, rather than having to avoid everyone at all costs - thanks again to everyone at Oakwood and to anyone thinking of using them, I can recommend them 100% :@)

We took Alfie our dog to Oakwood Dog Grooming and was very pleased with the service we got, they washed Alfie, dried him and then shaved off his excess hair, he was a very handsome dog once they had finished with him, we could stay and watch the whole process which was nice, would definitely recommend Oakwood to anyone thanks again everyone

  28. My partner and I adopted Crinkle, a large deaf lurcher, from a reputable local animal welfare centre who assured us apart from him being deaf there was no issues. It became rapidly apparent that he had major issues with dogs as he would go crazy everytime he encountered one.
Nicki at Oakwood was our first port of call, she quickly diagnosed fear/aggression problems. We did 1-2-1's getting to see lots of different dogs.
Every time Sarah and I thought we had hit his plateau the trainers switched, so we worked with Clare and Poppy, then Hollie and Inker and back to Clare again, all moving him forward.
Then, as we got settled, we were complacent and Sarah was bitten, obviously, we had to decide whether to put to sleep or send him back where he had come from. Even with this difficult decision, Oakwood helped and we moved on to working with Gill who worked out that Crinkle was scared of being hung over and being touched in certain places.
And again we were given simple easy training methods to combat his problems and not only that but every member of the team fought for to stick with Crinkle and not to give up. They were ready with advice whenever we needed it, with Gill even popping over for a cup of tea to observe him in the house and Hollie dropping everything to get him home one night.
While everything is still not perfect and we have been taking him to training for nearly 2 years now we have have moved from going crazy at a dog a long way away to meeting through fences, behaving perfectly at meet and greet classes and been a well behaved member of creche.
On top of this Crinkle was judged to be rehabilitated enough that we were able to foster a dog, something unthinkable back in 2011.
I can only recommend Oakwood highly as they changed not only Crinkles life but mine and Sarah's as well.

  29. We cant thank Gill enough for her help and advice, in addressing Oscar our Lhasa Apso's fear based problems. We got Os at 5 months old and soon learned he had not been socialised properly and had some issues which needed addressing, so called Oakwood. He had previously attended puppy play for quite a while, tho was reluctant at first to do anything but sit under the chair, but eventually did learn to interact with a few of the other dogs. Sometime later we decided we needed help and contacted Oakwood once more and had an initial consultation with Gill, who put us at ease and set us on a training programme to help overcome our problems. After several 1 to 1 sessions we have seen a marked improvement in Oscar's behaviour whilst out walking, we are now able to walk him anywhere with gentle encouragement, whereas before he would only walk in one direction on a small circuit around the block, we are now able to control his lunging/aggressing towards other dogs, and he is improving all the time, walks are much more pleasurable. We are taking part in the meet n greet classes and he has also been to creche, which we hope to do again in the not to distant future. Its great to have support of Gill and everyone at Oakwood, and we will continue to work with them as it can only be a positive thing for Oscar. I have and will continue to recommend Oakwood to everyone.

  30. Jess our rescue dog was extremely reactive and aggressive towards other dogs, especially on her walks, to the point we dreaded walking her.

After going to a standard group obedience type class at another training centre (and getting sent out every week for Jess’s disruption) I rang Oakwood and I am pleased I did. On our first assessment session Gill greeted us with a smile and a cup of tea, and after an hour of chatting and observing Jess she reassured me everything would be OK even if it might take some time!

We went to 1-2-1 sessions for a few months, Gill would bring in lots of dogs for Jess to meet and we would do lots of other training, including Clicker training which has transformed Jess into a more confident dog and she is now able to be around other dogs happily.

We now go to Meet and Greet classes, 9 months ago I thought this would never be possible. Most importantly Jess is much happier and we enjoy taking her on lovely walks.

The support Oakwood provide outside classes and the way you are made to feel welcome and at ease when you are there makes it a special place. I can’t thank Gill and everyone enough!

  31. Our dogs use the daycare whilst we are at work and there's nowhere I'd feel happier leaving them than Oakwood. It's great to know that whilst I'm at work they're under the care of knowledgable, professional staff - and having a great time. The training classes are great too - with lots of support provided for first time dog owners like me. I recommend Oakwood to everyone :)

  32. Hi Oakwood,

Just a note to say thank you very much to Gill and Claire for the training they did with our rescue dog Jack. When we got Jack home we soon realised that Jack had a problem been around other dogs, he couldn't be in a room with another dog without lunging and barking. Thanks to the one to one classes we did followed by creche visits, Jack is now on his way to been a happy balanced dog. He can now stay over at familys houses (all who have other dogs) and play nicely off lead. We are still working with the on lead stuff but thanks to the advice from Oakwood we now feel able and confident that this will soon be a problem of the past : ) Thank you guys, the work you do is fantastic and im always recommending you to people x

  33. We brought both of our puppies to the Puppy Playgroup sessions and it was great! It was a good chance to get a bit of advice from the staff whilst making sure the pups were thoroughly tired out and well socialised. We also met some other dog owners there who were lovely. The great thing was that the donation for attending playgroup went to the rescue side of the business.
